Lightbulb Boost : VIAGRA FOR YOUR ENGINE

I am amazed at the people who cry about their 2nd thru 5th gen Preludes being under powered . Their cars have nearly 3 times the power that my 1st Honda had but for some reason they can’t make it happen with what they got . My first Honda Accord lx in 1981 had 72 hp and a 5 speed . Shown below is the power output of some of the bad ass sports cars of the same time period . Learning how to get as much performance that I could possibly get out of my Accord was the best driving education I could get . I envy the owners of 1st gen Preludes because they are the best cars for learning how to get the most out of a small engine .
Toyota Supra : 140 HP
Porsche 944 : 150 HP
Corvette : 200 HP

Back then their was only one way to go fast and it required one to LEARN HOW TO DRIVE !

The two most important parts of driving fast with a small displacement engine involved keeping up momentum and keeping up enough speed that the engine will not drop out of its power band . If you lose speed when cornering , then as you exit the corner , that momentum will have to be replenished by the engine . Energy used on exit of a corner used to replenishes inertia is energy that’s not available to accelerate your car .
The Prelude has a transmission that is geared so that if your exiting a corner at or near its limits then the engine will be in in its power band and able to deliver the energy to accelerate out of the corner . If your skill level is such are such that you are not able to keep up the momentum and keep the engine in its power band on exit then the result is a disappointing rate of acceleration when exiting a corner .
Today’s drivers have a pill that helps compensate for their lack of ability on short auto cross tracks and back public winding roads and its called BOOST . For example , if you find yourself going into a corner in the wrong gear you just nail the throttle and everything works out ok because you have plenty of low rpm power with boost . I f you find yourself exiting a corner out of the engines normal power band and depleted of inertia , you just nail the throttle because again you have boost . Boost for people who drive short auto cross tracks or back public winding roads to me is like VIAGRA for your engine . Its for guys who can’t keep ( the rpms and inertia ) it up . Lol

Back in the early 1990es manufactures to save money decided to try to turn grocery getter , family cars into sports cars as a cheep way to satisfy that market . Thank God I own Prelude that was from the 2nd gen on a purpose built sports coupe !!! Shown below is an example of what I am talking about .

Plymouth Duster:

They installed a V6 mini van engine into this econo box and called it a sports coupe . Companies like Subaru with their Impersia are doing the same old shit today putting boost into family cars and redefine them as sports cars . I think that sucks . The Prelude is a purpose built sports coupe and I am sure glad I did not buy some thing that’ had to be modified and re-tagged .

My 3rd and Present Honda which is a 5th gen Type SH I dearly love and upping the power on it would just make it easier and more thrilling for me if I chose to drive into a ditch and that’s about all that extra power would be good for . Lol

You realize that most people couldn't care less how their car performs in autoX or on windy roads? They just want straight line fast cars.

That all changed with the double wishbone front suspension that gave the 2nd gen Prelude about .8gs of cornering power with Michelin MXV tires that were as good as you could get for that car at the time . The 5th gen TYPE SH Prelude was tested at as high as .9 gs in one of the car magazines ( Sports Compact Car ) and that was with cheap ass Bridgestone RE92 tires . Of coarse as a drag car your right , but on a twisty piece of road for which the Prelude was designed to run the Prelude is pretty hot .

As those boosted family cars with strut-type suspensions disappear into the next corner ahead, never to be seen again (until they lap me) I always make sure to shout "I'm a better driver than you, look at how great I am! My car is also extremely sporty, with DOUBLE WISHBONE front suspension!".

"Also, I can't fit anything into my car, because it's sporty! You can fit a mattress in your car, and it has AWD so it can be driven all year around easily. What a dumb family car!"

"Well, my car isn't really sporty....with a small engine, tiny tires, and a wicked front weight bias"

"But if you looked at the insurance costs you'd know it's sporty!"

"Hello??"

I honestly don't think there is one, the closest you get to fwd in a sports car is a car that has an adjustable awd like an sti

Fiat Barchetta

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAAAAA!

what the hell does a barchetta have to do with the word SPORT in the same sentence???!!??!??!!!?

one of the most useless cars ever made by fiat.
i would prefer even the multipla over the barchetta!

have you ever drove that crap?
worthless piece of shit. crappy engine, a massive understeer at SOOOOOOOO low speed, ultra-cheap interior that tears apart after the first speed bump, need some engine rebuild at every 50k km........
i dont even wanna remember that experience...

i agree about the ITR tho.

400+ Hp in a prelude is awesome . I think the op is actually poking fun at Boosting cars. Maybe I read it wrong. He drives a slow prelude and thinks no one should have a fast one. lol

The thing I wonder is if a person wants a drag car then why do they by a Prelude thats was not designed or geared to be a drag car and make it something its not . Why not just go get a Mustang or Camaro !! Those rwd guys at the drag strip probably get a good laugh every time you would try to launch a FWD 400 HP car with all that rearward weight transfer . lol
Even Mr Jackson of Jackson racing in a write up said about his supercharger that the biggest problem in having such power on a FWD car is constant difficulty in preventing wheel spin . I guess all that power could be used in 4th and 5th gear for those people who regularly find themselves going between 100 and 150 mph on the highway . lol

First off, who says because you have 400hp that you have to go to a drag strip? Who says that you because you have 400hp... your car is now a drag car? You have no idea what you are talking about.

This is how we have fun

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q94PW99Ta-8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgZ9wyz9w4I

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbbDM...eature=related

And yes you can turn a fwd car into a drag car. Yea the muscle car guys can laugh when you launch but its all about who crosses the line first.

And the best for last...

It's not like 400+hp isn't manageable..

Drive around on drag radials when you're out looking for some fun lol.
