PreludeTyper's B20A5 Build..UPDATE TOP PAGE 1

Well the B21 finally started giving me problems, such as oil burning, oil leaking from the backside of the head gasket, etc. My intentions were to rebuild the B21 back to stock, using honda parts and leave it be. The cylinders look great in the B21, but its getting replaced. So, I am swapping a B20A5 in instead. Here are the plans and checklist......Pics soon to come.

-B20A5 block bored to 83mm--going to machine shop
-Honda pistons/rings for a B21--purchased
-Honda main/rod bearings--
-Honda or ARP head studs/bolts and Rod bolts--
-Honda water/oil pump--purchased
-Honda gaskets/timing belt--purchased
-PK2 head-port/polish--working on currently-doing myself-nothing too crazy
-Valve guides/valve seats--machine shop
-JG Engine Dynamics stainless steel valvetrain--purchased
-Ported/Polished B21 IM w/ 65mm TB--complete
-DC Sports header/Thermal R&D--own
-New clutch for d2j5--have not decided brand
-Fidanza Flywheel--for d2j5
-D2A4 Tranny(90-91)--current trans
-Chipped OBD1 ECU
-Have a decent Tune

I will post updates as I go(along with pics).

UPDATE:10/28/08
So its been a hectic time trying to get everything together and finding time to work on the lude. Its been quiet a while since Ive posted any info. But on a good note I FINALLY, FINALLY,......FINALLY received my valvetrain that I ordered back in June!!! Ive recently progressed a little on the cylinder heads port and polish. Within the next few weeks you guys will be seeing a lot more parts rolling in and some more progression on this car. Heres some pics of the valves, etc, and the work that Ive done on the head so far:

UPDATE: 6/30/08
I had a small amount of time today, so I decided to start polishing and trying to finish one of the intake ports. I also started on the exhaust side of the head. This has been really time consuming....I really need to take a vacation so that I can get this head done!!! Keep in mind this is my FIRST time porting/polishing a cylinder head. Ive done a few intake manifolds and other machine work, but not a head. Its fun and a learning experience for me, but I think itll perform a little better than stock. So here are some pictures:

Thanks man!!

why is everyone boring the b20 to fit b21 pistons. is there a noticable difference. i have both a b20a5 and a b21a1 so if thats something i can do to increase power then thats good to hear.
so how does this sound... b20 bored to fit b21 pistons, b21 intake, b20 intake cam, b21 exahaust cam. what else could i swap to make the most HP
Well with the 83mm piston coupled with the smaller combustion chamber of the PK2 head, you gain about .5:1 compression. With decking the head an block theres potential to go over 10:1 compression with stock honda parts.

The b21 pistons are stronger... and the intake and exhaust cam will be a direct fit (i think).
Both b20 and b21 pistons are cast aluminum.......yes the camshafts are interchangeable.

Here is the bottom end, which is in really good condition! Still have to remove the rods and pistons....

Heres the cylinder head. Ive started cleaning up the ports and port matching the intake side. Ive got a lot of work to do hear. All of the cast lines and rough-ness will be removed from IN/EX ports. Then all the ports will be polished. After the new valvetrain comes in itll be off to the machine shop to have the guides and valve seats worked.

preludetyper does it matter where each individual lifter goes cause i just threw them all in a bag

Well those peices that push the valve down are actually rocker arms. Our heads do not contain lifters. But to answer your question...Yes it does matter where they are located. ANYTIME you have moving parts that have contact with other parts for a long period of time, its always a good idea to put the parts back where they came from, due to variations of wear on each part. That is of course if your reusing parts. Since you have mixed them up, I would suggest either to polish the surfaces of the rocker arms/cam lobes-(very minimal polishing though) just to try and make an even surface for each to wear back in, or replace the rocker arms with new ones. You could even get used ones from another head along with cams and place them accordingly to one another. You could just put them back in as they are but you may have more valvetrain noise even after doing a lash adjustment.

I was very shocked when I saw the bearings... This engine came out of my 88 auto, which I bought from the original owner. It has 224,000mi....I have all the maintenance records and it never shows having been rebuilt. It didnt appear that anyone had taken any of the bottom end apart.

^x2 clean bottom end. nice port work

#21 ·
haha.....yeah I lucked up on it! Whats sad is that my b21s cylinders and internals were immaculate. The cylinders had a good bit of wear, but NO scarring, scratches, nothing! I couldve rebuilt it with Honda .025 over but I already had rings for the 83mm bore. Plus I couldnt find anyone to hone it....But thankfully this b20 looks really good inside and should work out for the build.

This build keeps on adding and adding more parts and more money!! Its all apart of it though. Im trying to decide whether I want to slap a pair of Web Cams in my build. I beleive I may, but havent quite decided on it yet. But to get the best of what Im doing to the engine I beleive its a must......For those who have used Web Cams what is your opinion on the company and products?? Any pluses over Colt Cams?? Any first hand knowledge and experience would greatly be appreciated!

When you so called "Port and Polish" you want to leave the Intake Manifold with a semi-ruff surface. Theoretically you want the air and fuel to "tumble" so you get a better mixture. Exhaust you can port and polish the shit out of, that wont hurt. That's my .10 looks good thus far.

ive been reading up for my build and have gotten some opinions. im going with web cams grind #13. and from the looks of it we r kinda going toward the same thing. when im done with my build its still going to be my dd so thats y im choosing #13. but if i was building a good fast car and was going all out on my build then i would most defenitley go with grind #115.

as for colt cams ive heard some not so good things but plenty of good things also. but i havent heard anything bad about web and ive have talked to some users of both. i decided to go with web, but its up to u. another option would be b18 intake cam.

#26 ·
Cool. Yea if Im going to do any kind of cams it wont be a b18 intake cam. Id rather buy a pair of cams for the car. Probably Web Cams though.....I guess Ill decide when it comes down to finishing up the head. Yea mine will be my dd as well, so I want something practical...

So, today was kinda lame. I didnt get anything accomplished like I had planned.:| The block has yet to make it to the machine shop, and I havent recieved my valvetrain either. Ive still got a good bit left to do on the cylinder head though, so I suppose I can wait to get the valvetrain. I just get really excited when Im waiting on things to arrive in the mail!! I really enjoy opening new parts! I guess Im a dork.....

I have personally used Webcams and i would highly recommend them. I have heard nothing but bad things about Colt though. The head porting looks good but are you doing this yourself? I would personally give it to someone with 10+ years experience to do my porting so you know it will be done right and make better flow numbers than doing it yourself. You could make things worse. Are you tapering your valves? Getting bigger valves? Port matching the intake manifold? Id recommend you shave a little off that head too cause it looks like crap. I would say O-ring the head while you have it out too just for safe measure. Good luck with your build. I have something special being built at the moment too. But my stuff is a bit "different".

Yes head porting is being done by me. Im pretty confident that Im doing NO harm to this head. New valve seats, new valves, springs, retainers, and seals will be put in. They are stock size valves. Who doesnt resurface a head when you have a head off of a motor?? haha! The red markings on the head ports would indicate that Im port-matching to the manifolds. Thanks for the good luck, haha...Im gona need it!! I just have NO time to work on it, and it sucks.

well....not so good. The valve train that I got from JGE was defective. All the springs leaned over when stood up on either end, and the valves were ground crooked. I put the end of the valve stems in a drill and spun all of them, to find out that the heads of the valves wobble. I sent them back and they should be sending me a new set. They made 5 more kits since I purchased mine thank god!!

Update...sorta....Still waiting on the valvetrain to come back. Its been over a month now.....But it should be here by next wed. The head is coming along quite well. Ive kinda been slacking off because Ive been so busy at my job. I hope to see it running by the end of sept/oct, we shall see. Ive decided that Web cams #115 will be my choice of cams to finish off the head. I cannot wait to see how this setup works with my intake manifold and TB. Ill post pics of the head pretty soon, the ports look a lot better! I just really miss drivin my lude!:wzbigcry:
